GBCC is a public, 2-year community college located in New Hampshire. It is part of the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH).  Its mission focuses on expanding intellectual and economic opportunity by providing accessible, student-centered, and affordable higher education. It emphasizes excellence, innovation, collaboration, workforce development, and pathways for transfer to four-year universities.

GBCC serves New Hampshire's Seacoast region with a main campus located at the Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH, and a satellite campus in Rochester, NH.

Student Life Office & Success Center: The Student Life office actively promotes student development through diverse co-curricular activities. Much of this takes place in the Student Success Center on the Portsmouth campus, which houses the gymnasium, fitness room, locker rooms, the Heron's Nest Food Pantry, study spaces, pool and foosball tables, a student lounge, and the Student Government Association (SGA) office. 

Activities & Events: The college organizes various social, cultural, intellectual, recreational, and wellness activities and events to help students engage with campus life and each other. This includes intramural sports opportunities.

Clubs & Organizations: Students are encouraged to join or start clubs. Examples include the Art Club, Badminton Club, Board Game Club, Student Nurses Association (GBSNA), Student Veterans Organization (GBSVO), International Club, Kappa Beta Delta Honor Society, Outdoor Adventure Klub (OAK), Pride Alliance Club (P.A.C.), STEM Club, and Veterinary Technician Club. 

Student Government (SGA): The SGA serves as the voice for students, advocating on issues and overseeing campus clubs and organizations. Meetings are typically open to the college community. 

Leadership & Civic Engagement: Programs like the Emerging Leader and Engaged Leader retreats help students develop leadership skills. The "Great Bay Gives Back" program encourages students to complete 100 hours of community service. 

Athletics (The Herons): GBCC participates in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). Teams include Men's & Women's Basketball, Men's Baseball, Women's Volleyball, Men's & Women's Golf, and Men's & Women's Track & Field.

Great Bay Community College does not offer on-campus dormitories or student housing. Students must find private accommodation in Portsmouth or surrounding communities.

Rental Market: The Seacoast rental market, especially in Portsmouth, can be competitive and relatively expensive. Sharing accommodation is often necessary to manage costs.

• Portsmouth: Living directly in Portsmouth offers the most amenities and cultural attractions but generally has the highest rents. Neighborhoods vary – downtown is priciest, while areas further from the center might be slightly more affordable. Good access to COAST bus routes.
• Dover: Located about 15-20 minutes north of Portsmouth/Pease Tradeport. It's a larger city with potentially more rental inventory and often lower rents than Portsmouth. It's well-connected by COAST bus routes, making it a popular choice for Seacoast commuters.
• Rochester / Somersworth: Further north (approx. 30-40 min drive), these cities generally offer more affordable housing options but involve a longer commute. Served by COAST buses.
• Newmarket / Exeter: Towns located west/southwest of Portsmouth. Offer smaller New England town atmospheres. Rental availability varies. Commuting would likely involve COAST buses or driving.
• Kittery, Maine: Located just across the river. Offers very close proximity to Portsmouth. Rental costs can vary. Served by some COAST routes.
• Seacoast Towns (Rye, Hampton, North Hampton etc.): Primarily residential or seasonal areas. Year-round rentals might be harder to find and potentially expensive; commuting likely requires a car or less direct bus routes.

Since GBCC students typically commute, understanding travel options to the Portsmouth campus (located at Pease International Tradeport) and around the Seacoast region is important.

Local Bus (COAST):

• The primary public transit provider is the Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation (COAST). COAST operates routes connecting Portsmouth with surrounding towns like Dover, Rochester, Exeter, Newmarket, Somersworth, and parts of southern Maine (like Berwick).
• GBCC Access: Specific COAST routes serve the Pease International Tradeport. Students should check the COAST website for the most current routes and schedules servicing the campus (e.g., Route 41 has previously served Pease).
• Fare-Free Travel: A significant benefit is that GBCC students can use their valid Student ID card as a bus pass for fare-free riding on COAST services. This makes the bus a very economical option.

Other Bus Services:

• Wildcat Transit: The University of New Hampshire's bus system operates routes connecting Portsmouth, Durham (UNH), and Newmarket, which are open to the public. Fares may apply separately unless specific agreements exist.
• C&J Bus Lines: An intercity service providing frequent connections from Portsmouth to Boston (South Station and Logan Airport) and New York City. Ideal for longer trips or airport access.
• Cars: Owning a car is common for community college students, offering the most flexibility for commuting and exploring the region. Parking is available at the GBCC Portsmouth campus; students should check current permit requirements or fees. NH Rideshare programs can help facilitate carpooling.
• Walking & Biking: While downtown Portsmouth and other town centers are walkable and increasingly bike-friendly, the GBCC campus location at Pease Tradeport is slightly removed. Walking or biking the entire way to campus might only be feasible if living very close by. However, combining biking with a COAST bus ride (buses have bike racks) is a good option.
