Oxford House - Newcastle, newcastle-upon-tyne

Do NOT stay at this accommodation if you value your safety. Multiple crimes happened outside the accommodation recently and the area has become super unsafe, not to mention the gunshots heard last weekend and the protests that have been taking place right outside every Saturday. It has gotten to a point where police officers are stepping inside to speak to the reception staff. Stay somewhere else and don't say I didn't warn you.

UPDATE: Oxford House had recently changed management and my experience during the last few weeks of my tenancy was very unpleasent. I have yet to receive my £300 deposit, which should legally be returned by 14 days. They promised by 6th October everything will be settled but its now the 7th and there’s still nothing (50 days and counting since my move out date). The management was absolutely terrible to students, with the manager shouting and almost kicking out students for not signing extension contracts. How could we when you’re on leave and we didn’t receive any contracts to begin with. I had to find an alternative accommodation during the summer as the new management was completely unempathetic to the plight of students and unyielding to our situations even though the problem was all from their side. I've been calling Oxford House (OH) home for the past year now; and I love the whole atmosphere of the place. Coming to OH is hands down the best decision I have made to kickstart my university experience in Newcastle. I would like to give a shoutout to the very professional team which was able to make pre-departure, arrival, and living in Oxford House so enjoyable. They are responsive to emails and take complaints around the property very seriously. As an international student this is very assuring indeed. A major highlight of the accommodation does not only stem from its service but also facilities. Spread across three building blocks, the flats and corridors are never too crowded. I especially liked this aspect of living here since it was just what I was looking for. Most flats are 5 to 6 rooms only and the kitchen are spacious enough to accommodate up to ten persons or more. In other properties flats can have up to 10 persons with ridiculously small living spaces. You definetely will not see this in Oxford House. My first impressions about the property was extremely strong. Its only a mere 5-mins walk away from the city centre and most of the sights in Newcastle is just a metro ride away. I liked that its a bit tucked away from sight but still within walking distance to the centre of town. This made Oxford House felt more private which is a suitable trait for a good night's rest. It sits right beside the Newcastle City Library and Laing Art Gallery, both hosts to various exhibitions all-year round. Northumbria University is 5-minutes away by foot and right by its backyard. However, I attended Newcastle University which was much further out by roughly an additional 10-15 minutes. I wouldn't worry too much since bus stops and Metro stations are just a stone throw away from your doorstep. Newcastle is also a very bike-friendly city which is another option of transport to consider. Also of note is the proximity to Megabuses's pick-up point which disembarks right across the street from Oxford House taking you to Edinburgh, London, and other large UK cities. When you arrive back at Newcastle, you won't need to walk so far back to your accommodation. This is also true, to some extent, for trains as well. The accommodation was also very clean. Staff was particularly strict when it comes to eating in the common spaces and keeping the areas clean at all times. There are many social spaces on-site that students can choose from including study booths, sitting areas, theatre/movie room, game room, and an outdoor terrace. They can be bustling with life but not too crowded to be a nuisance. There is also a gym and laundry room on property as well. Security is 24/7 and the reception is always manned in case you get locked out. I stayed in an ensuite room in a postgraduate-only cluster. There were only five of us in one flat and we shared responsibility of the kitchen. I was very happy with how they paired the flatmates and felt it was compatible with what I was looking for in a shared living situation. It was a warm environment shared with interesting conversation and similar interests. The tenants in Oxford House also appear to be highly international with students coming from all over the world.

Have been living at Oxford House since September and everything has been great! The staff are very friendly and welcoming, rooms are also of a good size and modern. Downstairs there is a nice social area with pool tables, study places and a cinema room. The accommodation is in an excellent location with the city centre less than 5 minutes walk away and Newcastle and Northumbria campuses all very close. Would definitely recommend Oxford House as a student accommodation!

Been living here for 2 years now! Feels safe and it is super close to everything right in the town centre! The people from the reception are polite and nice. The living space downstairs is very comfy and warm and has got a lovely study space, pool table, TVs, Gym and a cinema room. Overall would recommend any students to get a en suite or a studio here. Top Place 👍🏻

Living in Oxford was a very good decision. I am Chinese, but I can feel the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in Oxford. During my stay in Oxford, the reception was very friendly. I liked the help I received from Poppy, Hong and Polina. Besides, Charlies and Mark were very warm, and they would greet me every time they saw me. Oxford night is also very safe, everyone is very serious to perform their duties. Love you guys~！
