Im a student living in the dorms since 2022. I have two younger siblings that I barely get to see because of our family circumstance, so my dorm is the only place I get to spend time with them. Recently I had my sibling visit me and do homework together, and as soon as they walked into the lobby the front desk denied them and said that they couldn't be here without a consent form from a parent. Like I said, our parents are not really in the picture so getting our mom to sign a consent form was going to be impossible. Our mom is the only legal guardian we have. Knowing this, Residence Life staff still refused my sibling to visit me without the signed form, and now I can't see my family in a private setting. I want UAA and Residence Life to know that students come from all sorts of different homes, and not everyone has the luxury of turning to their parents for support (or getting them to sign a form). That being said, UAA and Residence Life specifically has failed me as a student by making it extremely difficult to have my family as guests over. Residence Life ignored my unique family circumstances, denied my siblings from visiting me, and has ruined my mental health and academic success in the process. I hope students of difficult backgrounds are more recognized and accomadated at UAA in the future, and that students like me won't have to struggle in college anymore.
